Chapter Eight

SUNLIGHT WAS JUST visible around the edges of the bedroom curtains when Jade awoke after a long, deeply satisfying night. She glanced blearily at the clock on the nightstand, seeing that it was just after seven. The other side of the tousled bed was empty, and she thought she heard Trevor’s voice in the sitting room. On the phone, no doubt, tending to business.

Rolling to sit on the side of the bed, she stretched, then pushed her hair out of her face. At some point in the night—or early morning—she’d donned the simple nightshirt she’d picked out at the department store. Now she reached for the bag holding the remainder of her purchases and carried it into the bathroom for a quick shower. The stall was damp, as was one of the towels hanging on a bar. Apparently, Trevor had showered while she’d slept. Had he gotten any sleep at all?

The spacious marble-and-chrome bathroom was stocked with everything she needed for grooming. Toothbrush and paste, lightly scented soaps, hair care products and lotions, a hair dryer nestled into a wall-mounted holder—anything she could possibly ask for. Bathed and blow-dried, she applied a touch of makeup from the few items she carried in her purse and dressed in fresh underclothes and the simple tunic, black leggings and black canvas flats she’d picked out without trying on last night. Fortunately, everything fit as she’d hoped, so at least she didn’t have to spend the day in the clothes she’d worn for the wedding yesterday.

She found Trevor in the sitting room, sipping coffee and typing into his phone, which was plugged into a charger. Like her, he wore new clothing—a blue cotton shirt rolled up on his forearms, khaki slacks and canvas boat shoes without socks. Somehow he managed to look as smoothly polished in these moderately priced garments as he had in the probably hand-tailored suit he’d worn the day before.

Seeing her enter, he set the phone aside and rose. “Good morning. Nice duds.”

Laughing softly, she held out her arms and made a model’s turn. “Yes, I spent hours deciding what to wear from my vast choices this morning.”

“You look lovely, as always,” he assured her when she stopped in front of him.

She peeled off a stick-on tag he’d missed from the front of his new shirt. “Thank you. So do you.”

He chuckled. “Thanks. I think.”

“It was a compliment,” she assured him.

Trevor stroked her cheek lightly and she lifted her face for the expected morning kiss. Perhaps he didn’t notice. He dropped his hand and stepped away, saying genially, “I’ve taken the liberty of ordering breakfast. It should be here—oh, there it is.”

She blinked when he moved to open the door in response to the discreet knock. Was he acting a bit oddly this morning, or was she the one who’d forgotten how a morning after was supposed to feel?

A few moments later, they sat at the table at one end of the sitting room with bowls of steaming oatmeal served with a variety of topping options, whole grain toast, yogurt, juice and coffee.
